A good business should leave a place stronger
Profit is necessary. It should not be the only measure of whether a business succeeds.

The businesses that last are rarely the ones that grow fastest. They are the ones that become part of the place they serve, employing local people, paying fairly and investing in the street outside their door.
The argument
Local economies depend on businesses that can adapt. The choices being made here affect jobs, rents and the character of whole neighbourhoods.
This is not a call to slow everything down. It is a call to be honest about who is affected, to show our reasoning and to leave room for people who see it differently.
What comes next
Our business desk will spend the next year reporting on firms measuring success in new ways.
