When the cinema announced it would close, more than three thousand people pledged money to save it. The building reopens next month with a new programme and a volunteer team.
Why it matters
Culture gives places their character. When spaces for creativity disappear, they are very hard to bring back.
On the ground
Our reporting draws on interviews with residents, officials and independent experts, alongside public documents reviewed by the Newslora culture desk. Where figures are quoted, they come from published sources that readers can check.
What happens next
The first season includes a festival of films made in the region.
“We did not just save a building. We saved a place where the town gathers in the dark.”
