Inside the archive bringing forgotten artists back into view
A small team of researchers is rediscovering painters left out of the official history.

In a basement beneath the city library, three researchers are cataloguing more than four thousand works by artists who never made it into the major collections.
Why it matters
Culture gives places their character. When spaces for creativity disappear, they are very hard to bring back.
On the ground
Our reporting draws on interviews with residents, officials and independent experts, alongside public documents reviewed by the Newslora culture desk. Where figures are quoted, they come from published sources that readers can check.
What happens next
A first exhibition of rediscovered work opens at the library in March.
“History is not only what was kept. It is also what was overlooked.”
